US Solar Thermal Plant Shows Path for New Clean Power and Clean Jobs in Port Augusta

The Repower Port Augusta Alliance has welcomed the news that SolarReserve’s solar thermal power station has come online in the United States providing day and night solar power. Repower Port Augusta say the South Australian and Federal Government should capitalise on SolarReserve’s interest in building a similar facility in Port Augusta.

“SolarReserve’s American plant shows what could be possible here in Port Augusta creating new jobs and helping our community transition away from coal with day and night solar energy” Lisa Lumsden spokesperson for Repower Port Augusta said.

“Jay Weatherill has indicated Federal and State Government partnerships on renewable energy is a priority and working together to make solar thermal happen in Port Augusta is the perfect way to do it” Ms Lumsden said.

Repower Port Augusta say existing policies like the State Government’s plan to purchase low-carbon energy and the Federal Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency could be used to make solar thermal happen.

“The South Australian and Federal Government already have the policies in place to bring solar thermal in Port Augusta, what we need is the political will to do it” Ms Lumsden said.

The US project has created 4000 indirect jobs, 1000 in construction and 40-50 permanent jobs, something Repower Port Augusta say would add a big boost for the local community.

“Getting a plant like SolarReserve’s US solar power station built here in Port Augusta would be a huge boost to the local community who’ve been advocating for this for years. Bringing new clean jobs to town is a priority for our community and we want to work with the South Australian and Federal Government to make it happen” Ms Lumsden said.
