Australia's Ambition – Turn Pronouncements into Policies

DECEMBER 9,  Beyond Zero Emissions

Immediate Release

(PARIS) As the pressure for climate ambition increases in the last days of COP21 negotiations, many Australians cannot help but note that even though the case for 1.5degrees C, net-zero and 100% renewables is very clear in Paris it is still very much a case of climate dreaming at home.

Here, Dr. Stephen Bygrave,  CEO of  the Australian climate solutions think tank Beyond Zero Emissions,  which runs the Zero Carbon Australia and Zero Carbon Communities projects, outlines the contrast.

"Listen to Kiribati President Anote Tong speak and you know the case for 1.5 degrees C is compelling – impacts for the islands are already clear. Look at the footage of 1000 mayors making 100% renewables pledges and you see what’s needed is already happening.

“We’ve heard stories now of hundreds of cities, states and regions moving to 100% renewables – they are up on centre-stage in Paris - anybody can see that 100% renewables can be done everywhere.

"Many groups in Paris have presented modelling highlighting the transition to zero emissions - again showing beyond any doubt it can be done quickly with many benefits.

"In our own community Zero Emissions Byron project we have been showing what can be done when communities have access to tools for zero emissions transition.

"It can and is being done and governments, particularly poor performers like the Australian Government, simply need to move from pronouncements of ambition to real policies and action on the ground.

“It is not credible in the least for the Australian government to support a 1.5 degrees target and net zero emissions in the second half of the century yet claim coal is good for humanity, support fossil fuel subsidies, undermine the Renewable Energy Target, deny the importance of a carbon price and approve new coal projects like the giant Carmichael coal mine.
