Beyond Zero Emissions Inc. is a not-for-profit research and communication organisation developing blueprints for the implementation of climate change solutions. BZE’s goal is to transform Australia from a 19th century fossil fuel based economy to a 21st century renewable powered clean tech economy.

Through the Zero Carbon Australia (ZCA) research project, BZE is encouraging climate change policy that is in line with the latest science by developing fully-costed transition plans for moving Australia to zero emissions in ten years. The ZCA project covers six sectors including: energy, buildings, transport, land use, industrial processes and export industries. By sharing this research with thousands of Australians via the public talks program, BZE is engaging, educating and inspiring the community with real and positive solutions to climate change.

BZE is also partnering with leading organisations focused on climate solutions through the Energy Freedom initiative and the Zero Carbon Communities initiative. BZE has partnered with Byron Shire, whose mayor has committed Byron Shire to transition to zero emissions in 10 years as part of the Zero Emissions Byron project. BZE is currently writing a Zero Carbon Australia book that integrates all of its existing research into one publication – the Zero Carbon Australia book.

BZE’s work is delivered by a small team of knowledgeable, committed and passionate staff based in Melbourne and Canberra. Working autonomously and collaboratively, the BZE staff are supported by a large number of dedicated and skilled volunteers who are pivotal to the organisation’s success and contribute significantly to both research and technical aspects and public education.

BZE is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable researcher/analyst to lead its applied research and technical projects.

Reporting to the CEO, the lead researcher/analyst is knowledgeable on many aspects of climate change and climate solutions and is able to lead technically focused projects across each sector of the economy including energy, transport, agriculture, buildings and waste.

Key priorities include:

  • Refreshing the ZCA plans and developing the Zero Carbon Australia book
  • Developing short, responsive, innovative and cutting edge technical and applied research papers drawing off BZE’s existing suite of research
  • Delivering tailored technical research papers and advice as part of the Zero Carbon Communities and Energy Freedom initiatives and specifically the Zero Emissions Byron Project.

Key Responsibilities

1 Applied Research / Analysis

The position will be responsible for leading BZE’s technical, analytical and applied research projects. This involves working with the BZE staff team and volunteers on the key priorities as outlined above. Technical and applied research papers are to be targeted at topical issues in the media and climate movement.

2 Strategy and operational planning

The lead researcher/analyst will be responsible for strategic planning relating to topical projects in the media and assessing intersections with BZE’s existing research base. The position will involve regular interaction with BZE’s volunteers and staff as well as leadership and management of technical and applied research tasks and projects to ensure they are delivered on time and on budget.

3 Communications and networking

The position will involve regular interactions with the BZE communications staff on applied technical and applied research papers that are topical and timely. The lead researcher will also be responsible for networking with volunteers and managing volunteer input to the various papers. Another key role will be to provide analysis and technical input to the Zero Emissions Byron project as required by working groups involved with that project. This will entail undertaking short technical analysis to assist those working groups develop zero emissions plans for each sector in Byron shire.

4 Collaboration and teamwork

The position will involve strong collaboration and teamwork to ensure delivery of high quality and timely research. The lead researcher/analyst will be a solid team player who draws off the strength and ideas of the BZE staff and volunteers to deliver high quality and timely technical and applied research papers. The position will involve leadership of technical/analytical teams where appropriate, ensuring input is targeted and of high quality.

5 Relationships

The position will involve developing and building strong research relationships with other climate research NGOs and academic institutions, developing relationships with key supporters of BZE research, providing feedback to supporters of technical outcomes and liaising with community working groups.
